Bio

Craig Sorrells is quickly becoming one of the most recognized funk/soul/jazz musicians in the southeast US. With his soulful vocals, and a trumpet sound that screams New Orleans, Craig is packing clubs all over the region. Craig is from Spartanburg, SC and started playing trumpet at the age of 10. He was classically trained at a young age and attended The South Carolina Govenors School For The Arts. He obtained his first taste of world-wide honors in 1995 by winning a DCI World Championship while he was a lead trumpet(soprano) player for The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. After what he calls "That magical summer!!" Craig attended The University of South Carolina, in Columbia, SC, to study Music Education on a full music scholarship. While at USC Craig began his jazz studies under Bert Ligon, and legendary tenor sax player Roger Pemberton. In 1995-1996 he worked as brass caption head for the Irmo High School Marching Band under direction of Bruce Dinkins where he helped lead them to several Best Brass Awards, two straight SC 4A State Marching Band Championships, and a top 12 finish in the Bands of America High School Marching Band Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1997 he enlisted with The United States Marine Corps Band where he studied jazz at the Joint Armed Forces School of Music in Little Creek, VA. After his service in the Marines, Craig completed his music studies at Limestone College in Gaffney, SC. In 2002 he earned a bachelors degree in Music Performance.

Over the past decade Craig has toured the local, regional, and national circuits with many different bands including The Work, The Gypsy Souls, Laura Reed and Deep Pocket, The Professors of Soul, The Rickey Godfrey Band, Whitney Walters and The Sound, Chronic, Chocolate Thunder, Entropy, and Soulution. Craig has also performed on stage with some of the world's most renowned bands, and artists such as George Clinton, Warren Haynes, Ani DiFranco, Edwin McCain, George Porter Jr., Jimmy Herring, Victor Wooten, Karl Denson, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Wailers, The Derek Trucks Band, Lettuce, Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, The Rebirth Brass Band, Toots and the Maytals, Ivan Neville, Ekoostic Hookah, Garaj Mahal, Jurassic 5, Jeff Sipe, Col. Bruce Hampton, Oteil Burbridge, Stanton Moore, Robert Walters, The Lee Boys, Robin Ford, Johnny Winter, Stax recording legend William Bell, Zach Deputy, The Everyone Orchestra, DJ Logic, and many more.......

The Craig Sorrells Project is a culmination of all of Craig's vast perferforming experiences that combines jazz, funk, reggae, soul, and traditional New Orleans second-line into one big steaming pot of musical gumbo! When asked how the band was formed Craig replied, " I remember hearing an interview with Miles Davis where he said he could only attribute his success to the musicians he surrounded himself with over the years, so I decided to get the absolute best players I know and make something happen." And make "Something" happen he did. The Craig Sorrells Project is a ensemble of the most proficient, and talented musicians around, and if Miles Davis was right then Craig has put himself in a position to be very successful.
