Bio

Dr. John Moody has lived in Spartanburg for twenty years since he became the Choral Coordinator of the Spartanburg 7 Choral Program. In addition to teaching at Spartanburg High School, John has lead an active career as a freelance jazz pianist, playing piano with jazz ensembles and as a soloist all over the Upstate, Hendersonville and Asheville. John has also been the director of the Second Presbyterian Chancel Choir since the late 90s. John received his Doctorate in Music Composition from Boston University where he studied composition with the Pulitzer Prize winning composer, John Harbison.

While in Boston, John was also able to take jazz piano lessons from the Grammy Winning pianist Lyle Mays, from the Pat Metheny Group. John continues to compose, direct choirs, and play jazz piano with an active schedule that includes regular bookings as a pianist at “Blues Blvd.”, engagements with the Spartanburg Community Jazz Band, and the Spartanburg Philharmonic, concerts with his two choirs, and fulfilling various commissions with his compositions. His piece “Drip” was the winner of the “treefalls” “Call for scores” contest, and was performed by the SPO Winds as part of the “Espresso Concert No. 2” at the Chapman Center this past November.
